Artist Richard Swarbrick is apparently a big soccer fan and has created a few gorgeous videos recreating some of the best moments in this past year's season.
This first effort honors Gareth Bale and his hat-trick in the Champions League against Inter Milan at the San Siro in Milan, a notoriously difficult stadium for opposition players to play in.
This second one honors the greatest rivalry in the sport, even bigger than Michigan-Ohio State, Duke-North Carolina, Yankees-Red Sox. That rivalry is Real Madrid versus Barcelona, which escalates beyond the game into a political battle. Barcelona is considered more than a club, it is the national team of Catalonia, a region who wanted to break free of the centralizing tendacies of Madrid in the 1930's. Tensions rose enough between the two political dies that the president of Barcelona FC was arrested and executed by Francisco Franco, the dictator of Spain, whose capitol is Madrid, in 1936. This past season the 161st and 162nd matches were played between the two clubs, the video shows the 161st meeting, a 5-0 victory for Barcelona.
The third, released today, shows one of the most famous goals of this past year: Wayne Rooney's bicycle kick for Manchester United against Manchester City, another huge rivalry of the game.
These videos are simply amazing, and I sincerely hope (along with many other fans) that Richard Swarbrick continues to produce them.
